3 Tips to avoid plastic at home or work

plastic bags

Recycling plastic and other single-use products makes sense, it is even better to say no to plastic in our daily lives whether at work or home. Today we will share 3 tips on how you can avoid using plastic.

Garbage bags

Like many, you might be keeping your waste out in black garbage bags. In case you do keep your wet and dry waste separately, the environment gives you a pat on your back. Either way, those black bags are not helping the matter. Why? Well in most cases they cannot be recycled as either they are already too thin or there is value for recyclers as nothing can be made of it. The other issue is when you put your food waste in it the waste worker who comes to your place has to dig through it and throw the plastic. So what is the point in keeping waste in it?

Instead, line your dustbin with newspaper or any other waste paper and put your waste in it, that way no plastic ends up in landfills and better working conditions for waste workers.

Bring your own Dabba

With things opened up around us and many of us are stepping out albeit with precautions to our favourite restaurants.  These could be places you also do takeaway too. Ever wondered what happens to containers in which your swiggy/ zomato order comes. Unless you clean them of all food and give it to recycling, it lands up at a garbage dump near your place. Thereafter it will be either burnt or end up in the sewer. So when you go to a restaurant to eat out or takeaway, take a couple of steel/ glass containers from home to take excess food or your order home. This will also help prevent food wastage which deserves a post dedicated to itself too.

Switch to steel glass

As per one of the surveys, one of the things people going to the office have missed is the chai breaks to the nearest tea shop/ tapri. It has been part of socialising between colleagues, but do you also remember the endless teacups on the road. Even if it’s in the dustbin, where do you think it ends up. Same place your zomato container ends up. Why? well, it’s also made of a combination of plastic and paper and has some remnants of tea. So much waste will only get slowly burnt in a landfill or end up in a stray animal’s stomach. What can you do? Take your coffee mug or if you like your coffee in steel tumbler take that. Bring it back, wash it and repeat. Magic will happen that the paper cup pile will disappear.
